What can happen to your body if you start sleeping without a pillow?

The earliest known pillows date back to ancient Mesopotamia. They were made of stone, and only wealthy people could get hold of them.

Unlike those antique pillows, the ones we use today are soft and fluffy, and many people can not sleep without hugging a big, cozy pillow. But in reality, sleeping with a pillow may not be the best way to rest, as it can negatively affect your body and mood.

1. It can prevent back pain

Many pillows can lead to an unnatural sleeping position and the support they provide does not last long. While the pillow itself will not hurt your back, it can make several underlying symptoms worse. Conversely, when you sleep without a pillow, your spine can rest and your body stays in its natural position.

2. It can help you deal with neck pain

Most pillows do not allow you to sleep in the right position, and can even make sleeping postures worse. Bending your neck in any way for a long time will cause some discomfort, and a pillow that is too firm or too soft can lead to neck pain.

3. It can help you fight headaches

If you wake up with a headache or feel dizzy, it could be from your pillow. Pillows that are too thick cause your head and neck to round forward, and they add extra tension to the neck muscles. It can give you a headache in the morning after you get out of bed.

4. It can relieve stress

If your pillow makes you uncomfortable at night, you might end up rolling over in your sleep. The more trouble you sleep with, the less time your body has for the many important functions that occur during the night. Not getting enough sleep on a regular basis can affect your mood and thinking skills, and will cause your body to release more stress hormones during the day.

5. It prevents facial acne

Your skin will thank you for getting rid of your pillow. Your face is normally resting on your pillow most of the time at night. But you probably do not wash your pillowcase every day, and it collects dirt, grease and house dust. All of this can lead to premature rashes, inflammation, and wrinkles.

6. It can be good for your hair

If you wake up in the morning with dry, tangled hair, you might want to forgo your pillow for the sake of your locks. When you turn around at night, your hair rubs against your pillowcase, causing it to break. Pillowcases can also absorb the natural oils in your hair, making it dry and brittle.
